Why Gamification Improves Engagement

In 2019 TalentLMS conducted a survey to examine how gamified elements change the state of training, productivity, motivation, and employee engagement. The following results are from a pool of 526 people who use gamification in their workplace.

  • 89% of employees say that when a specific task at work is gamified they feel competitive and eager to complete it
  • Employees say gamification makes them feel more productive (89%) and happier (88%) at work
  • 61% of the respondents receive training with gamification
  • 83% of those who receive gamified training feel motivated, while 61% of those who receive non-gamified training feel bored and unproductive
  • 89% believe they’d be more productive if their work was more gamified
  • 87% said game elements made them feel more socially connected and provided a sense of belonging
  • 82% felt game elements provided a greater sense of meaning and purpose in their workplace

The most common gamified elements staff used during their workday were:

  • 71% mention badges as the most common gamification element
  • 59% say they’re granted points by an app or software at work
  • 56% are awarded virtual or physical rewards for accomplishments
  • 51% use leader boards
  • 47% work with levels

The survey shows overwhelmingly the positive impact and affect gamification is having on employees in the workplace. Aware of the positive outcomes of gamification Ok Alone developed Safety Awards, a way to add gamification and increase engagement with their lone worker safety solution.

The system allows workers to log their safe practises and compete with colleagues and companies across the world. The program recognises Ok Alone feature usage or when a worker completes a safe shift and rewards them with badges, points and rankings.

Badges are given for GPS activation, Man Down or High Risk use, contacting a supervisor by sms, going hands free or leaving a voice mail update among others. Workers can also get awards for reaching milestones such as completing 10 safe shifts or five safe weeks.

Workers are ranked individually, in teams, by company or country against the rest of the global community using the OK Alone lone worker system.
